Have you ever been scrolling through Pinterest looking for inspiration to create your own magical space, only to think, "this looks complicated," and keep scrolling in search of something whimsical?

Well, let me share something a lot easier. The simplest way to bring a little magic into your space is to start with a potion shelf.

Big or small, a potion shelf adds a mysterious, enchanting touch to any room, and the best part is, it can be completely customized to your style.

So let's build one together.

Step 1: Start Small

You only need 3–5 items to begin. That's it.

You are not trying to fill an entire shelf; you are building a small scene. Think of it like your own quiet little world on display.

Here are a few simple ideas:

  • One or two bottles placed beside a stack of books (you can even turn the books around so only the pages show for a softer look).
  • Small trinkets like keys, crystals, dried flowers, or jewelry with meaning
  • A candle you love, or battery-operated tea lights

It doesn't need to be perfect; it just needs to mean something to you.

Step 2: Add Bottles

Bottles are what bring the whole thing to life. And there is no shortage of places to find them. You can look for them at:

  • Craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby
  • Online shops like Amazon
  • Thrift stores (perfect for finding unique glass jars and vases)
  • Around your home (wine bottles, pasta jars, sauce jars)

And don't worry about them matching. In fact, the more mismatched the better. Different shapes, sizes, and glass tones give the shelf a sense of being collected over time.

Step 3: Fill Your Bottles

Now the fun part, filling your bottles. Remember, this is your space, so there are no rules here. You can use things like:

  • Herbs, tea, or spices
  • Dried flowers
  • Colored water (distilled water + food coloring)
  • You can even make color-changing potions

Use your imagination, be playful and experimental. Even simple combinations can feel magical once they're bottled.

Step 4: Add Labels (This Is What Changes Everything)

This is the step that transforms everything.

Without labels, they are just bottles, but with labels, they become something else entirely. They start to feel like artifacts from a different world with their own names, stories, and purposes.

How to Make Potion Labels

You can create labels in a few simple ways:

  • Stain paper with tea or coffee and draw your design
  • Design labels in Canva and print them at home
  • Use pre-made printable labels for an easier start

Step 5: Final Touches

Once your bottles are labeled, it's time to bring everything together and turn your shelf into a scene.

Layer your bottles on top of books. Add a candle for warmth. Place a crystal or object that holds meaning.

These small details are what make the space feel alive. Not because it's perfect—but because it feels like you.

If You'd Rather Start with Something Finished

If you're not in the mood to DIY or you just want something ready to place in your space, I also create handmade decorative potion bottles designed to feel like small artifacts from another world. Something you can simply set down and let exist in your space.
